In 2022, The CW underwent a significant overhaul after being acquired by the Nexstar Media Group. The modifications entailed the termination of a range of its established programs and a concerted effort to reach audiences beyond its traditionally youthful demographic. Central to the network’s offerings have been teenage dramas and superhero series, which have long been popular among its viewers.
Notable among the teen dramas has been the much-loved Riverdale, which, however, is scheduled to wind up later this year. As for the superhero genre, The Flash, which is widely recognized as the last mainstay series of the ‘Arrowverse’, concluded its run last month after nine fruitful seasons. The ‘Arrowverse’ still lives on through spin-off series like Gotham Knights and Superman & Lois, but the future doesn’t look especially promising for these shows on the network.
This has necessitated a shift in The CW’s strategy, with the airing of a series like The Chosen becoming a key part of their new approach. Brad Schwartz, the President of Entertainment for The CW, provided some insights into this strategic shift. He stated, “The Chosen is based on the biggest IP of all time and is truly a one-of-a-kind series that tells this historically significant story in a captivating, dramatic, and premium way. This show has already connected deeply with viewers around the world, and The CW will expand its audience even further.” The Chosen, a unique series which initially began its journey through crowd-funding, has recently come under the umbrella of Lionsgate, adding another dimension to its fascinating story.
